McKinney Boyd Revenges Plano West 3-1
McKinney - In a thrilling four set match, the Boyd Lady Broncos ran over the Plano West Wolves, 25-15; 26-24; 22-25; and 25-19. This win brings the team record to 24-14 and 6-1 in the District 8-5A play.
With a sea of red cheering the team from the stands in Boyd’s Red-Out Night, the Lady Broncs jumped out to an early lead and held it throughout the set. Strong blocking and hitting led the way throughout the evening. Outside hitter Cara Howley had 15 kills, 4 block solos in the night, and 30 digs. Hitter Drew Darling had 11 kills for the match, two block solos, a block assist, and 18 digs.
In set two during seamless play, the girls took it to an exciting 26-24 finish coming from behind twice. Middle hitter Megan Mollet really turned it on with incredible hitting. She totaled seven kills, two aces, and two blocks. Ally Cobb had four kills and two blocks picking it up in intensity in this second set.
The third set saw the Lady Wolves return strong volleys as they took the game 22-25. Although Boyd never quit fighting, West was able to finish this set with their only win of the night. Strong defensive play was made by junior Libero Kelley Martin with 39 total digs and strong jump serves.
With support from the cheerleaders and drum line, the fourth set was back and forth. Coming from behind, the girls fought hard with strong, consistent plays. Setters Lauren Ritchie and Cami Bryant had 24 and 25 respectively. With good cross court kills, Brittany Dubberstein added six points. Finishing the game with a kill, right side hitter Christina Cisar came through again and had eight kills.
Head coach Kelly Quinn was pleased with way the players continue to improve and get stronger every week.
Redeeming their only loss of the season from their last encounter with West, the Lady Broncs are currently head to head in first place in one of the strongest districts in the state.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action at Home on Tuesday night when they face Wylie. JV starts at 6:00 and Varsity starts at 7:00.
McKinney Boyd Downs Plano 3-2
Plano, Tx. – McKinney Boyd Varsity volleyball pulled out another strong fifth set to clench a victory over Plano Senior High School 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 15-7) in the first match of the second round of District 8-5A play.
Junior setter Cami Bryant and senior setter Lauren Ritchie did a great job tonight spreading the offense to all of the hitters. Ritchie led with 31 assists and Bryant added 26 of her own.
The majority of the Lady Broncs’ offense came from the outside hitters. Senior Cara Howley had a strong showing for the night and led the Lady Bronc attack posting 19 kills with 19 digs. Sophomore Drew Darling also had a double-double notching 13 kills and 14 digs.
Senior Christina Cisar had a personal best match posting 14 kills. Many of Cisar’s kills came at crucial points in the match. Opposite Cisar in the lineup was junior Brittany Dubberstein who also added depth from the right side with eight kills of her own.
Many of the Lady Broncs had service aces on the night. Freshmen Megan Mollett, who recently starting using her jump serve during matches, had three aces. Bryant added two aces, and Howley and Darling each had one service ace.
Defensively, junior libero Kelley Martin kept McKinney Boyd in the match. Martin had a fantastic night and was all over the floor with a season high 34 digs.
“We practice going to a fifth game and I feel like it is really making a difference,” Head Coach Kelly Quinn said after the match. “The girls are fighting and staying aggressive when the pressure is on in the fifth set.”
McKinney Boyd has played five-set matches in three of its first five district matches.
McKinney Boyd will be back in action at home on Friday night to face Plano West. Junior Varsity will start at 6:00 and Varsity will begin at 7:00. It is a red-out match so come wearing red and cheer on your Lady Broncs.
McKinney Boyd Upsets Allen in 5
Allen, Tx. - The Lady Broncs pulled out an exciting five-set battle (22-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 15-13) to upset Allen High School on Friday night. This wins puts McKinney Boyd in first place as the first round of District 8-5A comes to a close.
McKinney Boyd (22-14, 4-1,) came out fired up and was able to maintain their intensity to overcome some up and downward turns of momentum throughout the match. The Lady Broncs demonstrated great poise and composure when they needed to pull out the win.
Sophomore Drew Darling led the team throughout the night at the net notching 17 kills for a .340 hitting percentage while senior Cara Howley added 12 kills of her own. As a team, McKinney Boyd had 54 kills for a .240 hitting percentage.
The Lady Broncs performed well at the net defensively, posting eight total blocks with sophomore Ally Cobb posting six block assists and one solo block. Freshmen Megan Mollett also added depth to the block with three assists and one solo of her own.
McKinney Boyd and the Allen Eagles battled throughout the first set. With the match tied at 20 AHS pulled ahead by one. McKinney Boyd errors from hitting, defense and an error receiving the serve from the Eagles gave them the 25-21 win.
The Lady Broncs rebounded in the second set staying ahead by two or three. Allen tied the match a number of times but McKinney Boyd kept winning points to take the lead back over. A kill by junior Brittany Dubberstein gave the Lady Broncs the 25-21 win and tied the match at one set a piece.
Despite five kills in the third set by Darling and good defense by junior libero Kelley Martin, the Lady Broncs fell to Allen 17-25.
In set four, it was the serving of senior Cara Howley that helped McKinney Boyd jump out to a 13-5 lead. The Eagles fought back, but McKinney Boyd was able pull out the victory and force a fifth set.
The tension was high as both teams took the court for the fifth set. Allen took the first point off of a McKinney Boyd hitting error, but the Lady Broncs held strong and played steady. Boyd and Allen matched each other point for point, but four straight kills from Drew Darling gave McKinney Boyd the momentum. Senior Christina Cisar smashed a kill off of Allen’s D.J. Phee’s block to clench the victory for the Lady Broncs.
“I am extremely proud of the way our team fought tonight. Everyone took turns leading the match,” head coach Kelly Quinn said. “It was a real team effort and nights like these are what it’s all about.”
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Plano High School.
McKinney Boyd downs PESH 3-0
McKinney, Tx. – The McKinney Boyd varsity volleyball team continued to perform well taking a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-20) win over Plano East on Tuesday night.
The Lady Broncs (21-14) had 39 kills in the match for a .264 hitting percentage with sophomore Drew Darling leading the way with 12 kills.
Darling posted a hitting percentage of .367 with nine digs, one block and two aces.
Senior Cara Howley was second on the team with 10 kills and also 13 digs.
Senior setter Lauren Ritchie and junior setter Cami Bryant spread the offense out with 18 assists apiece. Other hitters that contributed to the McKinney Boyd victory was junior Brittany Dubberstein with six kills, freshmen Megan Mollett with six, and sophomore Ally Cobb added five kills on the night.
Junior Kelley Martin had 21 digs on the night and guided Lady Broncs throughout the match on defense.
McKinney Boyd will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 9 when it travels to Allen at 7 p.m. to wrap up the first round of 8-5A district play.
McKinney Boyd Lady Broncs down Wylie Pirates
Wylie Tx. – The McKinney Boyd volleyball team took a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-20) win over Wylie High School on Friday night to improve their district record to 2-1. The Lady Broncs notched 40 kills with 10.5 total blocks on its way to the win.
Senior Cara Howley continued her impressive performance as of late notching 15 kills while Sophomore Drew Darling added 10 of her own.
"Wylie came out strong in the first set, but once we settled down we did a good job of staying in system and keeping an aggressive offense,” head coach Kelly Quinn said.
Freshman Megan Mollett guided the defense at the net with 6 block assists and 2 block solos while senior Christina Cisar, Junior Brittany Dubberstein and sophomore Drew Darling had three block assists.
“I am proud of the way we served tonight. Our goal is always a 2:1 ace to error ratio and tonight we were successful at reaching that goal,” Quinn added. The Lady Broncs served well and the aces added up. Lauren Ritchie had four aces, Kelley Martin added three, Cami Bryant and Drew Darling also had two aces apiece.
McKinney Boyd’s defensive specialists and libero, Junior Kelley Martin, junior Lindsey Dickschat and freshman Kaley Seaber combined for 22 digs to guide the backcourt defense.
McKinney Boyd will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7:00 at home against Plano East High School. Tuesday will be Teacher Appreciation Day and the banquet will be at 5:00 in Room F110.
McKinney Boyd Falls to Plano West
Plano, Tx. - The McKinney Boyd volleyball team fell to 1-1 in district and 19-14 overall as the Lady Broncs lost 3-1 (20-25, 23-25, 25-23, 16-25) to Plano West on Tuesday night.
"We were out of system all night and with Plano West’s aggressive serving we didn't really have a chance to compete in this match," head coach Kelly Quinn said. "We are putting this match behind us and looking ahead to Friday’s match against Wylie."
Senior Cara Howley led McKinney Boyd with 17 kills, 22 digs, four blocks and one ace. Sophomore Drew Darling followed with 10 kills and 22 digs. Senior Christina Cisar played well with seven kills.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 2 when the travel to Wylie. JV will start at 5:00 and Varsity will begin at 6:00 due to Wylie’s homecoming.
McKinney Wins Battle over Plano
McKinney, TX. - To open District 8-5A play, the Lady Broncs pulled out a fifth set nail-biter over Plano on Friday night to win the match 3-2 (25-7, 17-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-6).
Senior Cara Howley led McKinney Boyd with 18 kills, while sophomore Drew Darling added 16 and senior Christina Cisar put up 6 of her own.
McKinney Boyd cruised to the win in the first set, but lost its rhythm in the second and never fully regained it until the fifth set. Sophomore Ally Cobb performed well at the net notching four block assists and three solo blocks. Megan Mollett added five block assists and two solo blocks of her own. As a team, the Lady Broncs had 50 kills for a .232 attack percentage.
“I’m very proud of the way our middles, Megan and Ally, stepped up and played tough defense tonight. They are playing with poise and intensity beyond their age”, Quinn said.
Setters Cami Bryant and Lauren Ritchie guided the offense with 21 and 17 assists respectively. The setters also stepped it up defensively with 11 crucial digs each.
Lady Broncs newcomer, freshmen Kaley Seaber gave a boost to the team in sets four and five, as she had seven digs a passing average of 2.2.
McKinney Boyd will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 29th when they travel to Plano West. JV plays at 6:00 and Varsity at 7:00.
